The German cellist Maximilian Hornung makes his debut this week as guest soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, on 13 and 14 February at the Palacio de la Ópera in A Coruña.
Under the baton of Case Scaglione, Hornung will perform Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, a landmark work for the great cellists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The programme is completed by Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, Op. 45.
The 2025/26 season marks a turning point for Maximilian Hornung. In addition to his debut with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, the German soloist will appear for the first time with the Berliner Philharmoniker, performing Dutilleux’s Cello Concerto under the direction of Thomas Guggeis. He will also make his debuts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Zürcher Kammerorchester. At the same time, he will serve as Artist in Residence at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he will take part in various projects as soloist, chamber musician and conductor.
His Spanish schedule is not limited to the concert in A Coruña. On 30 March, he will give a cello and piano recital with Hisako Kawamura at the Teatro Liceo in Salamanca, as part of the 14th Chamber Music and Soloists Series. Then, on 6 May, Hornung will return to Spain to appear as guest soloist with the Franz Schubert Filharmonia at the Palau de la Música Catalana, within the orchestra’s 20th anniversary season.
These engagements highlight the versatility of his activity in Spain: from the major symphonic repertoire to chamber music, as well as collaborations with leading orchestras.
