This versatile baritone, known for his acting skills, has developed an intense career in the major theaters of Europe, America and Asia. Singer, actor and writer, José Julián Frontal sings a wide repertoire, including opera, operetta and concert.
José Julián Frontal studied at the Conservatory “George Enescu” in Bucharest and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia (USA) with Bill Schuman. In 1994, he won the International Singing Competition “Ciudad de Logroño” and the second prize at the International Singing Competition “Jaime Aragall”. In 1996 he also achieved the second prize of the Fundación Guerrero and the International Singing Competition “Alfredo Kraus”, as well as the Special Prize SGAE for the best performer of Spanish music.
He made his Opera debut as Malatesta in “Don Pasquale”. In the same season he sings Geronio (“Il Turco in Italia”) in Tokyo, where he is named best performer of the season. Since that moment, José Julián Frontal has performed lot of operatic and zarzuela roles, such as Taddeo from “L’Italiana in Algeri”, Marcello (“La Bohème”), Count Almaviva (“Le nozze di Figaro”), Belfiore (” Un giorno di regno”), Silvio (“I Pagliacci”), Mercutio (“Romeo et Juliette”), Ford (“Falstaff”) or Dandini (“Cenerentola”), among many others.
He has sung in the most important theaters, such as Carnegie Hall, Washington Opera, San Francisco Opera, Tokyo, Teatro San Carlos in Lisboa, KammerOpera in Vienna, Teatro della Fenice, Teatro Real in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, among many others.
In recent years, José Julián Frontal has included new roles to his already wide repertoire, as Alfio (“Cavalleria Rusticana”), Escamillo (“Carmen”), Germont (“La Traviata”), Don Giovanni, Sulpice (La Fille de Regiment) and Juanillo (“El Gato Montés”), always accompanied by great success of critics and audience. In 2016, he sang in the world premiere of the opera “María Moliner”, by Parera Fons, as the main male carácter (Fernando Ramón), which he has already sung in 2017 at the Teatre Principal in Palma de Mallorca.
His concert repertoire includes Requiem by Dvorak, A German Requiem by Brahms or Requiem by Fauré, among many others.
He has recorded for Gramophone and RTVE the following titles: “Adiós a la bohemia” by Sorozábal, Leporello from “Il dissoluto punito” by Carnicer, “Don Quichotte” by M. García and “Curro el de Lora” by F. Alonso in the title role.
José Julián Frontal is the creator, writer and director of “DIVA’S” a music-theater show in two acts. He also has published his first book of poems “Aprendiz de poeta”.
