Norma Fantini has enjoyed success after success on the world’s great stages. Endowed with a distinctive voice of staggering range, agility and amplitude, her successful performances as Aida, Tosca and Manon Lescaut gave her the chance to win recognition and awards all across the world like one of the best interpreters of this repertoire, such as the “XXXV Award Puccini” bestowed by the Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago for her outstanding performances of Puccini’s Operas.
Norma Fantini has established an extraordinary international career, performing regularly on the world’s most prestigious concert stages and opera houses including Teatro alla Scala, RHO Covent Garden in London, Metropolitan Opera in New York, San Francisco Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Opernhaus in Zurich, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Staatsoper in Berlin, Teatro Real in Madrid, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Bruxelles, New National Theatre in Tokyo, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Regio di Parma, Teatro Regio di Torino and Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.
She worked with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Stéphane Denève, Daniele Gatti, Simon Yang, Fabio Luisi, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Nello Santi, Pichas Steinberg, and such directors as Hugo de Ana, Luca Ronconi, Graham Vick, Bob Wilson, Franco Zeffirelli.
Her recent engagements have included Tosca, Aida, Don Giovanni, La forza del destino, Don Carlo at the Staatsoper in Berlin, Manon Lescaut, Don Carlo and Aida at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Aida at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Bruxelles, Otello and La bohème at the Opernhaus in Zurich, Aida at the Metropolitan in New York, Un ballo in maschera, Tosca and Andrea Chénier at Wiener Staatsoper, as well as Il trovatore at Teatro Regio di Parma for Verdi Festival.
During the 2012/13 season she performed in a new production of La forza del destino at Barcelona Liceu, Tosca at New National Theatre of Tokyo, Wiener Staatsoper, Hamburg Staatsoper and at Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, a new production of Manon Lescaut at Hamburg Staatsoper staged by Stefan Herheim, a new production of Manon Lescaut at Dresden Semperoper under the baton of Christian Thielemann, as well as Andrea Chénier in Bregenz staged by Keith Warner.
She opened the 2013/14 season performing as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at Berlin Staatsoper, followed by Tosca during a Japan tour with Teatro Regio di Torino. Lately, she has performed Tosca at Las Palmas, Un ballo in maschera at Hamburg Staatsoper, Tosca e Andrea Chénier alla Wiener Staatsoper.
Active also on the concert side, Norma Fantini sang in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, performed in Genève with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, in Glasgow with the Royal Schottish National Orchestra and in London with the London Symphony Orchestra, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Norma Fantini was born in Cuneo and studied with Iris Adami Corradetti and Andrea Genovese. She was among the finalists of the “Maria Callas” and “Marcello Viotti” competitions and was the winner of the “A. Belli” Competition in Spoleto, where she made her debuts in Don Carlo (Elisabetta) and Mahagonny (Jessie).
